The deadly intersection: TB and tobacco smoking co-epidemics in Indonesia

The deadly intersection: TB and tobacco smoking co-epidemics in Indonesia

Dr TARA SINGH BAM – CNS

A tiger with its mouth open Description automatically generated In the lead up to World No Tobacco Day later this month, it is high time we recognise and effectively address the deadly synergy between the two epidemics that fuel each other: tobacco use and tuberculosis (TB). Tobacco is the single-largest preventable cause of death worldwide and TB continues to be the deadliest of infectious diseases in high burden countries (even despite the COVID-19 pandemic).

Can Erdogan Shed His Duplicity And Do Something Right?

Whenever I write about Turkey’s President Erdogan, I find it hard to articulate what kind of legacy this man wants to leave behind. He had every opportunity to become a great leader of a great nation but miserably failed. His self-aggrandizement, fake religious zeal, and ever-growing lust for power prevented him from discerning what was best for his country and how to become a constructive and truthful leader, admired and respected at home and abroad, which he so desperately desired.

Empowering Democracy: A Blueprint for Economic Development and Well-being in America

Empowering Democracy: A Blueprint for Economic Development and Well-being in America

The core of economic development is promoting democracy and guaranteeing the welfare of Americans and workers. Problems like unemployment and poverty are unacceptable in a democratic society. Access to affordable healthcare, housing, and education, as well as support for small enterprises, are critical components of a nation's democratic process. Decisions that put economics ahead of democracy should be based on the truth and individual principles.

The Menace of Identity Theft: A Growing Concern

A recent event has brought attention to the widespread hazards that Americans who conduct online transactions face, serving as a sharp reminder of the growing threat of identity theft. The victim, who would rather stay anonymous, opened up about their experience and the startling data on identity theft cases in the nation. Identity theft has become the most common criminality, impacting millions of Americans every year because of hackers taking advantage of online weaknesses.

Netanyahu Is Unfit To Serve; He Must Resign Now

Netanyahu Is Unfit To Serve; He Must Resign Now Netanyahu is writing and directing Israel’s darkest chapter. Each day he remains in power, he is preventing an end to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, dangerously eroding its moral standing while making the country a pariah state that lives by the sword

Since Hamas’ savagery of 1,200 innocent Israelis on October 7, one thing became abundantly clear. Netanyahu, and no one else, indirectly precipitated Hamas’ attack that led to the unfolding horror in Gaza, which could have been avoided.

To Let Suffering Speak: Käthe Kollwitz at the Museum of Modern Art

The Käthe Kollwitz exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art is a reminder of why art exists, and, at its best, what makes it of timeless, universal value. Kollwitz’s work fulfills the condition of truth, which as Theodor Adorno observed, is to let suffering speak. Or in her own words: “I felt that I have no right to withdraw from the responsibility of being an advocate. It is my duty to voice the sufferings of men, the never-ending sufferings heaped mountain-high.” Her work also compels us to reflect on the nature of feminism, especially as it relates to art.

The chasm between TB and HIV continues

A close-up of a train track

Description automatically generated “The two worst global health problems have combined forces well. But the institutions addressing them have miserably failed to put their act together,” wrote Dr Tim France, a noted global health thought leader, in an op-ed article titled “The chasm between TB and HIV” which was widely published in several newspapers of high TB burden countries in Asia Pacific and Africa in 2006.

United States unites for Peace in Israel and Palestine

Published in Cape May County Herald

People across the United States are coming together in big cities to ask Israel and Hamas, a group in Palestine, to stop fighting. I joined this effort too. I'm suggesting that Israel and Palestine should stop fighting and try to find a way to end the wars without making things worse. To achieve long-lasting peace between the two countries, I think there should be two steps.

Prescription Drugs

Published in Cape May County Herald Newspaper

My Friend lived happily until she went through a divorce and unfortunately she was pregnant. Her husband had a relationship with another woman and hence my friend left her husband’s home and I invited her to stay at my home in Court House. Haunted by the divorce and her conditions, she was quite depressed and the doctor prescribed medicines like Cymbalta (duloxetine) and Alprazolam (Xanax) for her problems. Everything was going well until one day I found her in the living room unable to speak or even open her eyes.

Creating A Strategic Alliance To Stop Iran In Its Tracks

Since the Iranian revolution in 1979, the US has not developed a long-term strategy toward Iran but instead has made tactical moves to deal with the various conflicting issues with Tehran as they arose. Conversely, from the time the clergy assumed power, Iran has developed a long-term strategy limited not only to staying in power but also to becoming the region’s hegemon without inviting major military retaliation by either the US or Israel on Iranian soil.
